I went to a Cultural studies orientation yesterday and that was fun. I met the other students in the program, several Americans and the other two WVU students are in there with me. They helped us figure out our schedules and gave us a tour of some of the main buildings. Apparently almost each building has a room they turn into a bar on Friday nights. So we hung out in the building bar for a bit, found the copy rooms, cafeterias, bookstore, library and bus stop. I was practically straight off the plane and didn't realize how long it had been since I'd slept. More than 24 hours for sure. So I'm thinking everything they showed us will make more sense the next time I'm over there.
The jet lag has really hit me this morning. I set an alarm with the best intentions of getting up at 8am (which my body still thinks is 2am) and I managed to make it up and out by 9 to find the store. It was a nice little walk, and the town is very cute. I've still got no idea its relationship to the university or to downtown yet, but I think I'll begin to figure it out soon enough. But just as soon as I got back I went back to bed for a long while. Its just now 2pm here and I'm finally feeling awake.
Its bitter cold in Aalborg. Deceptively so because to look out the window you'd think it was spring. The skies are a lovely blue and the grass is still green. Its nice, but frigid. My walk to the store was pleasant enough minus the cold. The side walks are quaint and brick. And there's a very quaint looking block buster. (pic to be inserted) I didn't really know where the store was when I set out so I asked a few strangers who were very helpful. Its called Aldi, and believe it or not, its nearly just like the Aldi at home. I think our Aldi has a U....yeah? Maybe not. It was cool. A gentleman was kind enough to help me shop for milk. There are all the different kinds like we have at home, but in Danish. So here I am assuming that Sodmaelk is soy milk when really its just whole milk. :-) I got Skummetmaelk. Which in hindsight does kind of look like skim milk, minus the English vowel. Beer and other alcohol is Very expensive here, as is cheese. But no worries, we're having a pub crawl on Wednesday night to help us find the best bodegas. :-) Cheap beer wooo!
I think tomorrow I may take a bus to somewhere up north. I hear there's some amazing scenery and unique historical spots.
